Santo Domingo. For the first time and under the motto “Stars in the Dark”, public and private organizations that have excelled in the implementation of sustainable practices in their operations in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda of the United Nations Organization (UN) were recognized.
The event, which had the support of the National District Council (ADN), the Association for the Promotion of Renewable Energies (ASOFER) and ECORED, is part of the celebrations for World Environment Day and seeks to raise funds to promote communities that do not yet have access to electricity, clean water and development through the Nature Power Foundation.
The activity was held at the Epic Center in Blue Mall and was attended by the Mayor of Santo Domingo, David Collado; Laura Rojas, Executive Director of the Nature Power Foundation, executives of different public and private organizations, as well as special guests and members of the national press.
Rojas stressed that the funds raised in “Stars in the Darkness 2019” will be used in the development of the first sustainable community in the Caribbean region, Nature Village, located in the province of Azua which will operate entirely with solar energy.
Those recognized for performing stellar work in the country were: BHD León, TOTAL, Grupo Ramos, Mejía Arcalá, Viva Wyndham, Saint Michael’s School and Citrícola del Este, in reducing CO2 through the installation of photovoltaic energy; Bepensa Coca-Cola, EGEHID and Mercasid, in the implementation of water management and treatment programs; Banco Ademi, Cervecería Nacional Dominicana and Claro, in programs that promote sustainable entrepreneurship; as well as other entities that contribute to initiatives in favor of the environment: Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in the DR, Cibao Association of Savings and Loans, Advertising Contact and the international donor Frank Moll.
It is a non-profit organization founded in 2017 as a social innovation that seeks to improve living conditions and contribute to the sustainable development of vulnerable communities in the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean, facilitating access to basic energy services and drinking water through alternative sources that protect the environment. Its founder, Ing. Laura Rojas, together with the sum of the efforts and experiences of high-level professionals, work to contribute to the achievement of the commitments assumed by the Countries in the 2030 agenda and their Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
